When Leaders lead
Judges 5:1 When leaders lead in Israel, when the people willingly offer themselves. Bless the Lord.
This is a good ‘leadership recipe’. When leaders lead and people follow the result is God glorifying. Every organisation, every church must be led by leaders, otherwise there will be no movement at all. God build into leaders vision and dreams, ideas and strategies, boldness and the audacity to fulfil the purposes of God for that church or organisation. The Bible is clear that spiritual leadership is a must in every church and in every community. It happens best when it occurs in the context of a spiritually gifted and equipped team of people working with a God called leader. God always appoints a leader and a team of people because in my opinion leadership is both singular and plural. It is not either or. Moses had Joshua, Aaron and Hur. Jesus had Peter, James and John. Paul had Timothy, Barnabas, Luke and Titus.
The Bible says that each believer is given a gift to be used “for the common good”. 1 Cor. 12:7. Each gift is not meant to be exhaustive, but complementary. No one gift is better than any other. Infact the gifts we possess are not for our benefit but for the benefit of others. A leader can’t exercise the gift of leadership effectively without other Christians partnering with him or her because other gifts compliment the gift of leadership. In the Book of Judges Deboral and her team won because they complimented each other.
I believe the church of God must be led by leaders, not necessarily pastors. There are some pastors who struggle with leadership. In my experience most pastors by the grace of God are also wired with leadership. The church should be led by leaders, taught by teachers and cared for by pastors.
Here is my favourite leadrship quote from John Maxwell; ‘If you think you are leader and no one is following, you are just taking a walk’.
Leader turn around today and have a look!
